Why your PDF prints too small, and how to fix it
Nine times out of ten the file is fine and the print dialog is scaling it down. A sizing option set to Fit, a paper mismatch between A4 and Letter, or a leftover pages-per-sheet setting will each shrink the output, and none of them announce themselves. Set the sizing to actual size, make the paper match the page, and check the preview's page count. If the text is still tiny, the page itself is oversized with the content sitting in one corner — and then the file, not the dialog, is what needs work.

The scale is shown before you print, and it is the fastest diagnosis there is. In Acrobat and Acrobat Reader the block is called Page Sizing & Handling, and the four choices behave like this:
- Fit scales small pages up and large pages down so they fill the sheet. Useful, and the usual culprit: anything wider or taller than your paper comes out reduced.
- Shrink oversized pages leaves normal pages alone and only reduces the ones that do not fit. Gentler than Fit and still a reduction.
- Actual size prints at the dimensions written in the file, with no scaling. An A1 drawing sent this way loses everything outside the A4 sheet — correct behaviour for a print shop, alarming at home.
- Custom Scale takes a percentage. It is also the setting that quietly remembers 68 % from a poster you printed in March.
Elsewhere the same controls wear other clothes. Chrome and Edge hide theirs behind More settings, where Scale offers Default or a custom percentage — type 100 for actual size, because there is no button that says so. Preview on a Mac shows Scale as a percentage, or Scale to Fit with the pair Print Entire Image and Fill Entire Paper; the second one crops your page to the paper's proportions, which is rarely what a document needs.
Whatever the dialog, one habit removes the guesswork: look at the on-screen preview and count the pages before you commit. Two sheets of paper where you expected one is a layout setting, not a mystery.
A4 against Letter: where three to six per cent disappears
This is the reduction people notice without being able to name it. Nothing looks broken; the margins are just a bit fatter than they were on the original.
A4 measures 210 × 297 mm. US Letter is 215.9 × 279.4 mm — wider and shorter. Fit a Letter-sized page onto A4 and the width decides: 210 divided by 215.9 is 97.3 %. Go the other way, an A4 page onto Letter paper, and the height decides: 279.4 divided by 297 is 94.1 %. Add the printer's own unusable border and you are looking at output somewhere between three and six per cent smaller than intended.
Six per cent is invisible on body text and fatal on anything measured. A ruler printed for a sewing pattern, a to-scale floor plan, a form with a signature box that has to line up with a stamp — all of them need actual size and matching paper, in that order. Set the paper size in the dialog to the one loaded in the tray, not to whatever the driver defaults to.
The settings that halve a page, or worse
When the output is not slightly small but drastically small, one of these is switched on.
Pages per sheet. Two pages on one sheet scales each of them to about 71 % in each direction — half the area, and below comfortable reading size for anything set in 10 point. Four per sheet takes it to 50 %. The setting survives between jobs and between documents, so a booklet you printed last week is still in force today.
Booklet. Same arithmetic, plus reordering, and it looks like a fault if you were not expecting it.
Choose paper source by PDF page size. This one is worth knowing about because Xerox documents it themselves: when the option is ticked, the application's page size overrides the driver's paper settings, and the printer starts asking for stock it does not have. On older Reader versions the visible symptom was stranger still — the first page printing as a thumbnail in the top-left corner, rotated 180°, with the rest of the document coming out correctly. It lives in the same Page Sizing & Handling block; leave it off unless a print operator asked for it.
A custom scale left over from another job. Check the number even when you did not touch it, because the field is remembered per application, not per file.
When the file really is the problem
Some PDFs genuinely carry a small block of content on a large page: exports from CAD tools, tickets generated on a custom page size, scans made with the wrong original size selected, statements produced on a page defined in pixels. The dialog cannot rescue those, because it scales the whole page and most of the page is empty.
Find out first. In Acrobat, File → Properties → Description lists the page size; Preview on a Mac shows it in Tools → Show Inspector. If it says something like 841 × 1189 mm, or 1200 × 1600 points, you have your answer.
The fix is to make the page the size of the content. Crop PDF does it with four sliders and a live preview of what will remain, and it changes the crop box rather than deleting anything — the ink outside the new boundary stays in the file, so widening it again later is possible. Crop to the content, then print with Fit, and the same drawing now fills the sheet instead of hiding in a corner.
There is a heavier option for files that have to print predictably on any machine: export the pages as images at 300 dpi with PDF to JPG, then rebuild them with JPG to PDF set to A4 portrait with small margins. Every page becomes exactly A4 with the content inside the printable area. Be clear about the cost — the text turns into pixels, so selectable text, links and form fields are gone. Use it for a stubborn one-off, not for documents you keep.
Cut off at the edge is the same problem upside down
Text clipped along one side has one extra cause worth separating out: the border no printer can reach. Current home models list a minimum unprintable margin of roughly 3 to 5 mm, and on inkjets the bottom edge is the worst of the four — older machines gave up more than a centimetre there, which is exactly why the last line of a page is what usually vanishes.
If the content runs closer to the paper edge than the hardware can print, you have three choices: Shrink oversized pages, which brings everything inside the printable area at the price of a few per cent; Fit, which does the same more aggressively; or crop away the empty band and reprint with Fit so the remaining content fills what the printer can actually reach.
One symptom that is not about margins at all: the whole page arrives rotated, or every second page does. A one-minute check, in order
Run these in sequence and the cause shows up within a minute. Stop as soon as the preview looks right.
- Set sizing to actual size — or Scale 100 in a browser — and look at the preview.
- Make the paper size in the dialog match the paper in the tray.
- Set pages per sheet back to 1 and turn any booklet mode off.
- Clear a custom scale percentage if one is filled in.
- Untick Choose paper source by PDF page size.
- Check the page size in the document properties. If it is far bigger than your paper, crop the page and print again with Fit.

Common questions
Why does the same PDF print correctly at the office and too small at home?
Almost always paper and sizing together. The office tray holds the size the document was made for and the driver is set to actual size; the home printer holds the other standard and the dialog is set to Fit, which reduces the page to make it fit. Match the paper, then set actual size.
What is the difference between Fit and Actual size?
Fit scales the page so it fills the sheet — up for small pages, down for large ones. Actual size prints at the dimensions stored in the file and lets anything outside the sheet be lost. If a measurement on the paper has to be exact, actual size is the only correct choice.
My first page prints as a tiny thumbnail in the corner. Why only the first one?
That is the documented behaviour of Choose paper source by PDF page size in older Reader versions: the first page came out as a rotated thumbnail while the rest printed normally. Untick the option in Page Sizing & Handling.
Does cropping delete the text in the margins?
No. Cropping sets the page's crop box, so the content outside it is still in the file but no longer part of the visible page. It stops being printed, and a later edit can bring the boundary back out.
Can I make just the text bigger without changing the layout?
Not from a print dialog. Scaling is proportional: everything grows together, and past 100 % the page stops fitting the sheet. To get physically larger text, print the document on larger paper — A4 content on A3 at Fit is roughly 141 % — or go back to the source file and change the font size.
Is printing from a browser different from printing from a PDF reader?
Yes, and it matters here. A browser gives you Default or a custom percentage and applies its own fit to the printable area, with no label telling you what it did. A dedicated reader names the choice — Fit, Shrink oversized pages, Actual size — which is what you want when the size has to be right.
